Andy Bay Kavanagh proved age will not be a barrier this season.

The side - predominantly made up of Kavanagh College pupils - beat Varsity 51-40 in women's club basketball at the Edgar Centre on Tuesday.

It joined last year's finalists South Pac Magic and Ajax as winners on the league's opening night.

Annabelle Ring led the way with 14 points, while four others added six or more points each for Kavanagh.

It showed composure against Varsity's zone, and crashed the offensive boards well, Ring and Bronwyn Kjestrup coming up with several key rebounds.

But it was on the defensive end that it won the game.

It held Varsity to five points in the first quarter to build an eight-point lead.

Varsity fought back through the middle two quarters and trailed 32-29 at the final break.

However, Kavanagh streaked away in the fourth, showing a range of threats by getting points from six different scorers.

On court two the Magic rode a strong start to beat the Andy Bay Falcons 78-53.

It exerted its dominance in transition early, while Claudia Flaws hit two three-pointers to help her side take a 24-11 lead at quartertime.

That grew to 33-15, before the Falcons began to gain parity.

They had a strong third quarter and guard Jordyn Chin - who led all scorers with 19 points - found her touch just after halftime.

Despite that, the Falcons were unable to pull it back.

Point guard Georgia Te Au's distribution allowed the Magic to continue scoring in transition, and moved the ball in the half court.

That got its scorers plenty of looks, and Letitia Mullaly and Millie Simpson proved difficult to stop.

They had 18 and 12 points respectively, while Flaws added a third from deep and finished with 11.

In the late game Nicole Ruske led Ajax to a 64-41 win over over new team South Pac OGHS.

Ruske had 20 points - including three shots in a row from deep in the second quarter - while Olivia O'Neill had 14 to help the defending champions off to a winning start.

They led 36-13 at halftime, although Hannah Matehaere (21 points) battled well for OGHS and helped her team pull back to win the third quarter.
