Bowls: No-frills Hill set to get straight to work

Auckland bowler Jamie Hill is not one of those sportsmen who need hours of preparation.

No walk over the park, no in-depth video analysis.

For Hill (29), it is just a case of arriving in Dunedin this morning for the Professional Bowls Association finals - hopefully his flight will not be delayed - getting to the Westpac Bowls Stadium and then straight into action.

"I might have about half an hour to do a bit of a roll-up and then have a look at the green," he said.

"I haven't been playing much lately but it shouldn't take too long to get into it.

That is the good thing about indoor greens.

They are controlled so you sort of know what you are going to get."

Hill is an entrant in all four singles events and could win three trips to events later in the summer in the United Kingdom.

He will start this afternoon in the Scottish Open singles in which he will take on Murray Glassey, of Napier, and Peter Wilson, of Dunedin.

The trio will play each other in a round-robin format with the winner of the event qualifying to play in Scotland in November.

At the same time, Hill will play in the Welsh Open singles, against Wilson and Stephen Zino, of Wellington.

The winner of the event will play in Wales in February.

Tomorrow, Hill will play in the World singles, up against Glassey, Chris Lourie, of Hamilton, and David Archer, of Dunedin.

The winner of this event will be off to the finals in England in January.

Hill said he knew little about his opponents, but felt the game was more about what he did than what his opponent was trying to do.

He was a member of the controversial Gary Lawson-skippered four that was accused of throwing a match in Malaysia last year.

Hill, who is a greenkeeper in Auckland, said he had only played at the Dunedin stadium once before but remembered he enjoyed playing on the surface.

A Shanghai Singles competition will be contested tomorrow afternoon by six players, including Hill, with the winner getting a trip to Fiji, though it will not include any bowls-related activities.

A pairs contest will conclude the action on Sunday.
