Bowls: Still work for talented LeLievre to do

It took a long time but talented Auckland bowler Chris LeLievre has finally broken into the Black Jacks 10-man squad this year.

LeLievre (28) started playing bowls at 15 and quickly built up an impressive record in the strong Auckland centre.

At the age of 23, he was the youngest bowler in that centre to win his gold star. He now has 10 Auckland titles.

LeLievre has won seven national events - two New Zealand championships and five Pathways titles.

He had a promising year in 2007 and was selected for the New Zealand development team against Canada and was also in the national under-25 squad. LeLievre took a step up when he was named in the 10-strong Black Jacks squad after the New Zealand championships last January.

He was tested at the North East Valley invitation singles at the weekend but failed to make the cut for post-section play. However, singles is not his best event.

''The singles is a tough competition. You are on your own and there is nowhere to hide,'' LeLievre said. LeLievre's results over the past seven years have been impressive but it took a long time for the national selectors to put him in the Black Jacks.

''The selectors told me that my results were good enough to get me in the squad,'' he said.

''But it is not always about results.

''There were a couple of little things that I had to work through and improve. It was mainly off-the-green stuff. I wasn't badly behaved by any means but I just needed to tidy a few things up.''

Ironically, last season was not one of LeLievre's best on the green.

''But the selectors must have seen some sort of improvement in me somewhere,'' he said.

LeLievre has made the first step but there is still work to do because he has not yet made the Black Jacks team for a major event and received his New Zealand cap.

He was not in the top seven players who travelled to the United Kingdom last winter and has had to revise his aspiration of playing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games next year.

''There is still a lot of work to do to get that cap and play for New Zealand,'' he said.

''I'm pretty competitive and want to be playing at that top level.''

LeLievre has resigned as club manager at the Onehunga Bowling Club and has switched his allegiance to the Eastbourne club in Wellington. He flies to Wellington each weekend to play in the national interclub sevens competition over a five-week window.

''I have been playing bowls in Auckland for 13 years and was getting a bit stale and complacent,'' he said.

''I thought that a change of scene would help me.''
