McLean (33), the marketing manager of the Otago Cricket Association, is a member of the New Zealand PBA team that is playing for the $NZ43,100 prize pool at the East Cessnock Invitation fives in Australia.
He is one of three Dunedin players in the New Zealand PBA's second team that is competing in the event.
The others are Aidan Lusby and Ross Munro.
They are joined by Bart Robertson (North Harbour) and Maree Jones (Southland).
McLean, a board member of Bowls New Zealand since 2012, was forced to give up his chance of qualifying for the English International Open Singles because of work commitments.
He won the Dunedin qualifying event but, instead of playing in the national final, he put his work commitments first and travelled to India with the Otago Volts for the Champions League twenty20 cricket competition.
McLean, a bowls player for 10 years, has been selected as skip of the pairs and the fours for the Cessnock tournament.
This will be the first time he has represented New Zealand overseas in bowls. He was ranked 14th in the PBA last year.
This will be Lusby's second overseas trip for bowls. He played in the United Kingdom last year, when he was ranked seventh in the PBA. He will skip the triples and play third in the fours.
The third Dunedin player in the team is Ross Munro, who has won two PBA events in Dunedin and was ranked 15th in the PBA rankings last year. He is lead in the pairs and fours.
The top New Zealand team playing in the tournament includes Dunedin players Duane White and veteran Ken Walker.
This will be the third international experience for White. He was a member of the winning Trans Tasman team last year and played in Scottish singles in the United Kingdom in January. White, top of the New Zealand PBA rankings last year, is lead in the triples and fours.
Walker, the skip of the triples and fours, was ranked third in the PBA rankings last year.
He has played in seven World Bowls Tour events in the United Kingdom.
The New Zealand A team will play in the Trans Tasman series on Friday and Saturday this week. Walker was the individual champion in 2012 and this will be the fifth time he has played in the Trans Tasman Challenge.
The other members of the New Zealand A team are Murray Glassey (Hawkes Bay), Craig Merrilees (Southland) and Wayne Stewart (Waikato).
