The little things counted for Euan Wong and helped him win a dramatic boys singles final on the extra end in Dunedin yesterday.

The Hutt Valley High School pupil beat pre-event favourite and last year's runner-up Monte Pawa (Kaitaia College) 11-10 at the Northeast Valley green.

A key to the win was his accurate draw bowls. He rarely drove during the game.

"I like bowls because it is not all physical, and mastery of the little things count," he said.

The penultimate end was dramatic, with both players playing outstanding rescue shots to stay in the time-limit game.

Wong led 10-9 and played what looked to be a match-winning shot with his final bowl on the 15th end.

The bell had rung to end the game and it was the scheduled final end. He excitedly picked up the mat before the crowd told him to put it back into position.

He waited patiently as Pawa had a sip of water from his drink bottle and then played a classic weighted shot to push the jack into the ditch and gain a point to force the extra end.

Wong tried to stay relaxed as the toss was made and he chose to play the last bowl and let Pawa roll the jack.

"I hoped he wouldn't put down a short jack and then push it into the ditch," Wong said.

"I just tried to remain relaxed. I did not want to get stressed out."

Wong was two down on the head but remained relaxed as he played his third bowl and drew the shot. Pawa was wide and Wong became the New Zealand secondary schoolboys singles champion.

Wong gained the early advantage with his accurate draw bowls and led 7-1 after six ends. But he was not complacent.

"I knew that Monte was a good player and would come back at me. His last shot to force the extra end proved that," Wong said.

Pawa gained seven shots on the next five ends to lead 8-7.

"I knew that his streak would end as long as I kept playing accurately," Wong said.

Dean Drummond (Hastings Boys) beat Clayton Hockley (Takapuna Grammar) 21-4 to win the bronze medal.

The boys pairs was won by Cameron Higgins and Thomas Eminson (Tauranga Boys College) when they beat Jordan Linn and Joseph Doyle (Coastal Taranaki School) 9-7.

Higgins retained the title he won last year with Nicholas Tomsett.

Scott Mansfield and Tu Solomon (Kaikoura High School) won the bronze medal.

The Mason twins Elliot and Oliver of Otago Boys won the plate event when they beat Thomie Davies and Rory Soden (Auckland Grammar) 15-3.
