Christine Buchanan has been given the singles spot in the strong Central Otago women’s bowls team to play Southland later this month.

She is one of three elite Queenstown bowlers selected in the 14-strong team that has been split into two sevens combinations.

The others are Margaret O’Connor and Debra Lloyd.

They combined in the Queenstown triples team that won the New Zealand club title  last year.

Buchanan and O’Connor won the New Zealand open pairs title at Auckland in 2014 and the triples with Linley O’Callaghan (Alexandra) in 2013.

The Southland match at Queenstown uses the same format that will be used in the prestigious national intercentre sevens and will give the Central Otago team the chance to develop its combinations.

Central Otago has been the New Zealand intercentre sevens champions only once.

That was in 1976 when the men’s team triumphed.

It is important to win the match against Southland to develop the combinations and confidence that the Central team needs before it contests the national event later in the season.

Howard O’Donnell (Clyde) has retained the singles spot, while Ewan Kirk (Ranfurly) has been given the other singles berth in the men’s team.

The experienced Pat Houlahan, who has won 22 Central Otago titles, returns to the team as skip of the pairs, with Richie Muir (Wanaka).

The promising Alan Brash (Wanaka) skips one of the fours teams.

Central Otago will play Southland at Queenstown on Sunday, October 30.
