Lack of depth tells against Sth Otago

Alanna Preddy continued her good form but the lack of depth proved costly for South Otago when it was beaten by Southland in the annual representative bowls match.

The 32-strong Southland team won the singles, pairs and fours event at Invercargill by 136-88, to win the Friendship Cup.

Preddy was one of four South Otago players who won five of their six games. The others were Robert Wilson, David Fenton and Marilyn Paterson.

Each team member played two rounds of singles, pairs and fours. Preddy's only loss was in the pairs.

Preddy recently became the youngest bowler in the South Otago centre to win five titles and her gold star.

She won both her singles, against Southland's Grant Fortune 9-4 and Peter Carnie 7-6.

Wilson, who is second on the South Otago honours board with 24 centre titles, also won both his singles with wins against Caroline Braithwaite 8-7 and Willie Donaldson 9-7.

Fenton and Paterson both lost one of their singles games. Fenton beat Jan Low 10-9 but lost to David Craig 11-4. Paterson beat Neil Lawson 9-6 and lost to Pam Durry 8-6.

Jane Wintringham, in her representative debut, was the only unbeaten South Otago bowler, with three wins and three draws.

She drew both her singles, 7-all with Clark McLeod and 10-all with Jennifer Beattie.

Southland's Steve Langley was the only bowler to win his six games. Brian Turner was also unbeaten with five wins and a 9-all draw in the singles against David Grant.

The South Otago Development team was beaten 17-7 by Eastern Southland at Gore.

South Otago will be represented at the regional final of the mixed pairs at Dunedin in July by Stephen Preddy, Biddy Craig, Craig Botting and Greg Keach.
