Callum Horwell (13) is punching above his weight. He only started playing indoor bowls 18 months ago and is now the Otago under-18 champion.

His quick mastery of the little bowls helped him to win the Otago regional final 17-9 and has qualified him for the New Zealand finals at Wellington next month.

He was introduced to indoor and outdoor bowls by his grandmother, Ngaire Wilson, at the Kaikorai club.

"Nana took me along to the club one day. I enjoyed it and kept playing," he said. "It is something to do."

Bowls is the family sport, with his uncles, Peter and Steven Wilson, also playing for the Kaikorai club in outdoor bowls.

Callum plays indoor (small bowls) and outdoor (big bowls) at the Kaikorai club and is not fazed playing against older players. He has made quick progress in both forms of bowls because of his dedication to practice.

"I practise five hours a week and go to club nights at the Kaikorai club each Tuesday," he said.

He also has an unflappable nature and demonstrates a calm and steady concentration on the green.

"I'm targeting the New Zealand finals," he said. "That is my next goal."

Bowls is not Callum's only interest. He has a mechanical mind and enjoys fixing cars. Holdens are his favourite.

When not playing bowls or fixing cars, he likes to watch wrestling on television.
