New Zealand have picked up two medals in the ring this morning.

First up, Kiwi boxer David Nyika won the gold medal in the men's 81kg final, the first boxing gold for New Zealand in the Commonwealth Games for 24 years.

Nyika beat Kennedy St Pierre of the Mauritius in a unanimous points decision.

St Pierre started the fight strongly, with the judges awarding him the opening round in a split decision.

But the 18-year-old Nyika bounced back, comfortably taking the second round.

Nyika, from Hamilton, was the better mover throughout the fight, keeping his distance from the St Pierre and landing enough blows to accumulate a solid points victory.

Less than an hour later, fellow Kiwi David Light claimed silver after losing the 91kg final to Canada's Samir El-Mais in a split decision.

El-Mais was dominant in the first round, but Light fought his way back to take the second.

The two traded blows in the third and final round, but Light wasn't able to do enough to tip the points balance his way.
