83-run partnership gets Marist home against SBHS

The match of the round in Invercargill club cricket on Saturday was between Marist and Southland Boys’ High School 1st XI.

Batting first, school opener Hamish Skelt scored 28 while his colleagues fell around him. Jason Domigan was fifth man in and managed to put together 47.

Domigan lacked support and the team was rolled for 148. Marist bowlers Josh Fitzgibbon and Sam Rodden took four wickets each.

The Marist reply started poorly, as the side’s three big guns failed to fire.

Marist was vulnerable at 30 for three and then again at 66 for five, before Jeremy Boyle (57 not out) and Ben McKercher (35 not out) put together an unbeaten 83-run partnership to take the win in the 39th over.

Waikoikoi had home ground advantage for its match but could not chase down the 236 set by Appleby.

Appleby batsmen Clint Goad (45), Venkatt Cotte (43), Kieran Lloyd (41) and Elliot Dawson (37 not out) all made valuable contributions. In reply, Waikoikoi was facing embarrassment at 98 for eight, before Bradley McFaul (41) and Michael Grattan (29) brought the total through to 161. Appleby won by 74 runs.

Invercargill Old Boys batted first against Metropolitan and put on 251 for six, thanks largely to Liam McWilliam (69) and Amarpreet Singh (65).

Jason Osborne was the best of the Metro bowlers with three for 35. Osborne then made 21 with the bat, while Jerome Diack (40) produced the only other noteworthy effort. Old Boys bowlers Blake Tempero and Sam Nicholson took three wickets each as Metropolitan fell well short.
