Another Carson century keeps Comets at the top in South Otago

The Clutha Comets will go into the Christmas break at the top of the South Otago 40-over competition ladder.

The Comets beat the Waihola Swans by four wickets in Milton on Saturday on the back of another century from Caleb Carson.

The Swans elected to bat and recorded a competitive 203 from their 40 overs.

Brad Williams was the shining light with a fantastic knock of 92, facing 105 balls and striking 13 fours to hold together an innings that was boosted by 42 extras.

Daniel Sutherland and Connor Smith took three wickets each for Clutha.

Carson then continued his fantastic form from last week, plundering 10 sixes and seven fours on his way to 116 off
just 76 deliveries.

At the other end, however, the Comets were losing regular wickets with Swans bowling prodigy Lachie Macdonald securing a rare hat-trick, removing Daniel Sutherland, Sam Mosley and Michael Hayes in consecutive deliveries.

Kelan Smith showed a cool head at the end of the innings, hitting an unbeaten 38 to
get his side home inside bonus-point territory.

The Owaka Bandits will also head into the summer break on a high after beating the Kai Kings by 14 runs.

Owaka made 165 for seven from its 40 overs, powered by 67 from opening batter Jeremy Gray.

The Bandits were 90 for four when Reece Pullar struck 41 off 49 balls to lift his side to a total that could be defended.

William Casey was the pick of the Kai bowlers with three for 38 off eight overs.

Kai started the chase well, passing 40 inside six overs, but Owaka fought its way back into the contest with some tight bowling.

The Kings were looking good when they reached 141 for six, but the tail crumbled, and they were dismissed for 151 in the 36th over.

Casey top-scored for Kai with 41, and Jason Young added a brisk 22.

Francis Parker took four for 39 off eight overs into the wind for Owaka, and Matt Morahan grabbed three for 42 off seven overs.
