Bold hitting by Union's Shields brothers

There was some big hitting in Oamaru club cricket on Saturday

A merry innings of 111 by Thomas Shields, backed up by brother Jeremiah (55) and Duncan Drew (29), enabled Union to make 250 for nine in its 50 overs at King George Park, against Oamaru.

The best of the Oamaru bowlers were Roger Cathoged (three for 29) and Reece Curle (two for 48).

Oamaru, which had won the toss and elected to bowl first, was dismissed for 120 in 28 overs.

Jordan Bartlett top-scored with 35, while legspinner Jim Graham took four for 55 for Union.

Valley beat Waitaki Boys' High School by 103 runs at Milner Park on an outfield which was a little sluggish early on.

Valley, batting first, made 199 before the final wicket fell in the 38th over.

Lachie Kingan dominated against the Waitaki Boys' attack, finishing with 72. He was backed up by all-rounder Cameron Grubb (39) and Ben Mavor (25).

Bowling for Waitaki Boys', Liam Mavor took three for 34 and Angus Philpott claimed five wickets.

The school side got through to 183 for eight wickets, Eli Johnston leading the way with 26 runs.

Bowling for Valley, Hamish McKenzie took two for 12 and Grubb four for 16.

At Glenavy, Albion beat the home side by five wickets.

Glenavy, batting first, made 142 in 37 overs.

The innings was dominated by the power of Rodney Van Leeuwen, who hit 47, including six successive sixes from a Ricky Whyte over, while Matt Tangney (20) gave support.

Bowling for Albion, Brady Kingan, Whyte and Matt Finn took two wickets each.

Albion, set 144 runs to win, lost five wickets before passing Glenavy's total. Martin (61) and Kingan (32) guided the side through.

Jackson Henshaw and Van Leeuwen took two wickets each for Glenavy.
