Cricket: Bracewell omitted from team because of cut foot

Black Caps pace bowler Doug Bracewell has been ruled out for the first test for medical rather than disciplinary reasons.

The 22-year-old cut his right foot while cleaning up after a rowdy party at his home in Napier during the weekend and has been replaced by Otago seamer Ian Butler.

''Unfortunately his foot has not recovered in time,'' New Zealand coach Mike Hesson told gathered media.

''We've removed him from the 12 but he will stay with us during the week and, hopefully, be ready in time for the second test.''

Hesson said the decision was based on Bracewell's physical condition and had nothing to do with any alcohol-related indiscretions. The cut is in an awkward place and Bracewell cannot put any weight on his foot.

''I was not at his house at the time but from what I understand he was cleaning up in the morning following having a group of people over to watch rugby.

''We're really disappointed for Doug and for the team because he is a crucial part of our seam attack.''

New Zealand Cricket put out a press release earlier in the morning which advised Bracewell had been reminded of his responsibilities as a contracted player.

''We've told Doug that he needs to take responsibility for what happens around him and that he needs to do all he can to ensure his preparation for international cricket is not compromised,'' manager Mike Sandle said.

''Doug is very sorry for any inconvenience he has caused his team-mates and members of the public, and he has apologised to his neighbour in Napier.''
