Cricket: In-form Broom key to Otago's chase for runs

All Neil Broom wants before Christmas is a third century.

The in-form Otago batsman is on the verge of a third century in as many matches and, if he reaches the milestone, there is a good chance he will help get Otago across the line in its Plunket Shield match with Auckland at Colin Maiden Park in Auckland.

Chasing 314 for victory, Otago was 188 for five at stumps yesterday with Broom undefeated on 86 and Leighton Morgan at the wicket with him on 17.

The visitors still need 126 runs, so the match is very much in the balance. Broom is the key for Otago.

The 26-year-old right-hander has been in sublime touch, amassing 395 runs at an average of 79 prior to this match.

Add the 105 runs he has scored so far in this game and Broom has already scored 500 this summer.

If he carries on at the same rate, Broom could threaten Glenn Turner's record season tally for Otago of 1027 runs achieved in 1975-76.

Auckland resumed its second innings on 188 for two yesterday with Jeet Raval on 99 and Gareth Hopkins on 22.

Raval brought up his second first-class 100 after a nervous night and was eventually undone on 134 when Nick Beard got one past the left hander.

Wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder did the rest, removing the bails for a smart stumping.

Hopkins extended his score to 70 before experienced medium pacer Warren McSkimmig trapped him in front.

Reece Young added 55 to help the home side reach 354.

He was out to a great one-handed catch in the outfield by James McMillan.

McSkimming bowled superbly throughout, finishing with the impressive match analysis of nine for 79.

With a substantial run chase, Otago faltered early with Shaun Haig and Greg Todd both trapped in front.

Broom joined Otago skipper and opener Craig Cumming at the wicket with just 10 runs on the board.

The pair were going along nicely, adding 132 runs in quick time, but Cumming came unstuck on 59 after offering a catch from the bowling of spinner Bhupinder Singh.

Playing in just his second first-class match, Bhupinder Singh soon trapped de Boorder in front and in the same over bowled McSkimming as Otago slumped to 154 for five.

Singh has three for 29 from 11 overs and will be a threat when the match resumes today.
