Former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews ended his 119-test career with a draw against Bangladesh in Galle yesterday.
Set an unlikely 296 from 37 overs to win on the final day, Sri Lanka never made an attempt on the target, but did give Bangladesh some cause for hope, slumping to 48 for 4 at one stage before batting out the remainder of the day.
Mathews helped his side secure the draw on his last day in test cricket with a stonewalling 8 from 45 balls.
Debuting in tests in 2009, he led his country in 34 of his tests and finished with 8214 runs at an average 44.4, scoring 16 hundreds and 45 fifties, also picking up 33 wickets with his part-time medium pacers.
In 2018 in Wellington he memorably batted all of day four in partnership with Kusal Mendis against a Black Caps attack containing Neil Wagner, Tim Southee and Trent Boult to deny New Zealand a test win. — APL
