Cricket: More rain a pain for Volts

There was no early Christmas present for Otago - just more rain.

The Volts have been desperate to get back in the winner's circle after starting the HRV Cup with five losses and were hoping Santa's sack might contain four competition points for a rare win.

But the weather gods have robbed Otago of that opportunity with its last three matches abandoned due to poor weather, including last night's fixture against Central Districts in New Plymouth.

The upside is Otago has collected another two points for the abandoned match.

The down side is the team has just two matches left to post a win this season and no chance of rescuing what has been a bleak season.

Weather permitting, Otago will play Canterbury at Molyneux Park in Alexandra on December 27 and round out the tournament against Wellington in Queenstown on December 29.

Wellington beat Otago by three wickets earlier this month and Canterbury had a six-wicket win in Christchurch on December 15.

Auckland leads the competition with 24 points from eight games.

Northern Districts is in second place with 18 points, and Wellington and Central Districts tied on 14 points.
