Cricket: National date for Albion

Albion easily beat Green Island in the knockout final of Dunedin club cricket yesterday, winning a place in the national club final in Auckland in April.

Batting first at Logan Park after Green Island won the toss, Albion struck a solid 238-8, with solid contributors from its middle order. Green Island lost wickets regularly after an encouraging start in reply and eventually fell 64 runs short.

No-one scored heavily with the bat for Albion, but useful contributions from Jamie Glenn, P. J. Cairns and Scott Haines helped the side through to a defendable total.

Haines held the bottom of the Albion innings together, although Mark Joyce grabbed two wickets and opening bowler Blair Soper took three.

In reply, Green Island looked good, with Scott Simpson and Geordie Baird combining for a 57-run partnership.

But as soon as they separated the wheels fell off and, when Joyce went without scoring and Jamie Munro ran himself out, the suburban side was struggling.

Peter Cairns bowled a nagging length and was hard to get away, while spinners Daniel Ford and P. J. Cairns also tied the Green Island side down.

Albion will play in the club final, for the second time, at the start of April.
