Cricket: Spinner bags five in Albion demolition job

Albion left-arm spinner Nick Beard took five for 14 from five overs to help his side demolish North East Valley by eight wickets.

North East Valley 108 lost to Albion 111/2 at the Oval

Beard represented New Zealand earlier this year at the under-19 world cup and has been in good form this season, earning a call-up for Otago during a trial match against Canterbury in Lincoln last week.

Cracking the Otago team could be a battle, though, as the province is well served with off-spinners Nathan McCullum and Will Somerville.

Beard's five-wicket haul, and three for 18 from Nick Cape, restricted North East Valley to 108.

Ollie Allen top-scored but was undone one short of a half-century when he was trapped in front by Beard.

Shaun Haig smashed three sixes and 13 fours in his 78 to make short work of the chase.

Jamie Murley picked up both wickets but Albion won in the 15th over.

University-Grange 248/8 lost to Green Island 250/4 at Sunnyvale

Mark Joyce and Dion Lobb posted an undefeated 103-run stand for the fifth wicket to steer Green Island to a last-over win over University-Grange.

Joyce made a slow start and was on three after 20 deliveries, but he picked up the pace to finish with 64 from 80 balls.

Lobb, who earlier took three for 39 from 10 overs, scored 54 from 53 balls, including one six and three fours.

Opener Hamish Rutherford set a platform with a fine knock of 58.

He and Scott Simpson (33) put on 93 for the first wicket.

Black Caps opener Aaron Redmond was bowled for one but was the pick of the University bowlers, taking one for 21 from 10 overs.

Earlier, Michael Bracewell top-scored with an undefeated 88.

The wicketkeeper-batsman's innings included seven fours and five sixes and helped University reach 248 for eight.

Eric Standfield bowled well for Green Island, taking two for 30 from 10 overs.

Pelichet Bay 267/9 beat Taieri 246/9 at Memorial

Former Black Caps fast bowler Ian Butler grabbed a five-wicket bag to help Pelichet Bay beat Taieri by 21 runs.

Butler trapped Marcel McKenzie in front for three and bowled Mark Beer for 18, then picked up three more when Taieri hit out towards the end of its chase.

He finished with five for 49 from 10.

Earlier he scored 32 to help Pelichet Bay post 267 for nine.

Pelichet Bay openers Leighton Morgan and Shaun Fitzgibbon got their side off to a promising start, putting on 63 before Fitzgibbon was trapped lbw for 40.

Morgan got through to 55 before he was bowled by Jarrod Waldron.

His patient half-century included four fours.

Former Auckland Under-19 player James Fuller thumped 62 from 52 balls to guide his side past 250.

Waldron was the best of the Taieri bowlers with four for 44 from 10 overs.

Ant Harris and Tim Clydesdale got Taieri's chase off to a rollicking start, putting on 125 for the first wicket in good time.

Harris scored a run-a-ball 74 including 12 fours and a six, and Clydesdale's 56 included eight fours and a six.

Taieri appeared on course until Robbie Smith removed both batsmen to bring Pelichet Bay back into the game.

He finished with three for 36 from 10 overs.

Carisbrook-Dunedin 206 lost to Kaikorai 207/5 at Tonga Park

Craig Sneedon took six for 38 to help Kaikorai post its second win this season with a five-wicket win over Carisbrook-Dunedin.

The left-arm medium-pace bowler captured the prized wicket of Sean Eathorne on 33 and then removed his brothers Kieran (16) and Nick (17).

Charlie Hendry took one for 36 from 10 overs, but some of the bowling was wayward.

Kaikorai conceded a staggering 24 wides, helping Carisbrook-Dunedin post 206.

Hendry anchored the chase with 68, including 10 fours, before Colin Aitken (40 not out) and Jason Glover (20 not out) steered their side to victory.

Paul Hoffman bowled well without success.

His nine overs cost just 30 runs, while Rhys Phillips conceded 33 runs from his 10 overs.
