Sri Lanka were 262 for three at stumps on the opening day of the first cricket test against New Zealand at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.

Mahela Jayawardene was unbeaten on 79 and Thilan Samaraweera was not out 78, the pair having already added 147 for the fourth wicket.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori took two of the three wickets to fall enabling him to complete the 300-wicket 3000-run test cricket double.

He had two for 65 from 30 overs at the close; seamer Iain O'Brien was the other successful bowler with one for 52 from 16.
