King’s High School begins McCullum Cup in style

King's High School has emerged as the favourite  to claim the McCullum Cup after posting back-to-back wins on the opening day at different venues in Dunedin.

It held on to beat John McGlashan College by two runs in the morning and beat Otago Boys’ High School by 51 runs in the afternoon.

Otago Boys’ has had a mortgage on the twenty20 tournament since  it  was introduced in 2012, winning it five consecutive times.

But the school is fielding a below-strength team with many of its best players still away on the tour of India and Sri Lanka.

Waitaki Boys’ High School is the other team in the  cup  section and lost both its matches.

King’s will play Waitaki Boys’ in its final round-robin match today but is safely through to the final this afternoon.

The match between Otago Boys’ and McGlashan is effectively a semifinal with the winner earning the right to play in the final. In the plate competition, Wakatipu High School, James Hargest College and Taieri College are all undefeated.
