Neesham pleased to contribute

New Otago captain Jimmy Neesham says it has not been  too big a  switch in taking over the captaincy of the side.

Neesham has stepped into the role vacated by Hamish Rutherford, who was forced off the field because of a back injury.

Neesham started with a narrow loss to Auckland and hopes to bag his first win when the Otago Volts take on Canterbury at the University Oval tomorrow.

With Rutherford injured and Brad Wilson wanting to concentrate on his batting, the mantle fell to the all-rounder.

"It is a job I’m pleased to contribute with and, hopefully, we can get a few more wins," he said.

It was not a big change from going from player to captain for Neesham.

"I have always thought about what I would do if I was captain in the field, anyway. It is one step further and you get to move people around.

"The main thing for me is clear communication with the bowling unit. If they have their own plans they want to implement, then I’m more than happy to go with them. Maybe a few tweaks here and there."

Neesham’s job is part of a co-ordinated plan set out before the match, involving senior players and the coaching staff.

But that plan is yet to bag a win in the one-day competition, coming off a twenty20 campaign which ended in a string of defeats.

Neesham (26) feels a win is around the corner.

"We have got ourselves into winning positions in pretty much every game so far, so it is a bit of a double-edged sword somewhat. It is pleasing that you can get into those positions but it is disappointing that you can’t finish the game off.

"We have had a discussion, especially within the batting group, about putting the foot on the throat when you get in winning positions and that is something we hope to do in the next couple of games.

"We have got the talent and ball-striking ability. It is just a case of pegging back that aggressive instinct a little bit. That has been coached into us through the twenty20s and we need to hone that in a bit."

The competition has just started and Neesham is not pushing the panic button yet. The side just needed a win and it would come.

"Look at the last game. You need 100 to win with five wickets in hand and normally, you would do it in a bit of a canter. But at the moment, the lads are down and have had a few losses in a row. On the same side,  if you get into a couple of winning situations and do the job, it can be turned around.

"Confidence comes from doing stuff before. If you have won a couple of games in the past you know you can go out and do it. But in the past, eight or 10 months for a couple of the guys, yeah, you do go out and wonder how you are going to go about things. When you get to that winning situation and do the job, that is when the confidence comes."
