The search for a spinner to join Otago has landed a Dutchman out of South Africa, coming from Dubai.

Michael Rippon has been named in the Otago side to take on Canterbury tomorrow He  is scheduled to arrive in Dunedin today.

Rippon (25) is a right-hand batsman and bowls left-arm chinaman deliveries.

Born in South Africa, with Dutch ancestry, he played first-class and limited-overs cricket for Western Province in South Africa and then joined  English county Sussex.

He first played for the Netherlands in 2013 and has just finished playing for the side in a twenty20 nations challenge in Dubai.

Otago Volts coach Rob Walter said the side needed some more spin cover and Rippon fitted the bill. Anaru Kitchen was performing well as a slow bowler but the side needed another spinner to bring some stability through the innings.

Rhys Phillips was a developing spinner but not quite there yet.

Volts assistant coach Anton Roux had a lot to do with Rippon when Roux was the coach of the Netherlands, Walter said, and was confident in his abilities.

Rippon would stay for rest of the Ford Trophy and the start of the Plunket Shield.

Young paceman Nathan Smith comes into the Otago side in place of Bradley Scott, while Sam Wells drops out of the 12.
