North East Valley batsmen have a rough day, Rutherford opens his shoulders

North East Valley 64
lost to Taieri 66/5 by five wickets

In the only senior game played on Saturday, Taieri was a comfortable winner over North East Valley at Brooklands.

North East Valley never got out of first gear in the match, and no batsman got more than 13 as it limped its way to 64. Jack Hunter picked up a couple of wickets at the top of the innings, and then Ben Lockrose came in near the end and mopped up the tail.

It was slow going from the Valley side, as the visiting team scored at less than two an over.

Charlie Holt was the last man out at the start of the 36th over.

Taieri only had a small total to chase down, but was in trouble early on, when it had lost four wickets and only had 18 runs on the board. Skipper Fraser Colson also left the match retired hurt.

But Cam Jackson steadied the ship and his unbeaten 27, in effect, won the game for Taieri.

Travis Muller was lively with the ball for Valley and picked up three wickets.

The other games, which had Kaikorai taking on University Grange at Bishopscourt and Green Island facing Carisbrook-Dunedin at Sunnyvale, were both abandoned without a ball being bowled because of the weather.

Kaikorai will face Albion in the final of the twenty20 competition after some lusty hitting in the semifinals on Friday night at Tonga Park.

With Otago Volts players fronting up, there were some big scores and the ball flew around the park.

Hamish Rutherford opened for Albion and carried his bat, scoring an unbeaten 114 off just 66 balls. He hit 82 runs in boundaries. His Otago team mate Josh Tasman-Jones also gave a helping hand, scoring 52 off 25 balls, with all but six of his runs coming in boundaries. Albion ended up on 239 for three in its 20 overs.

Taieri was always going to find 12 an over a tough chase. It came up well short, being dismissed for 89 in the 14th over. Colson scored 38, while Josh Cuttance with three wickets and Taylor Cumberland with two, did the damage for Albion.

In the other game, Kaikorai scored 194 for seven.  Mitch Renwick hit 85, 66 coming in boundaries. Josh Finnie with a breezy 42 and Michael Rippon with 34 also helped the cause.

Carisbrook-Dunedin made a decent effort to try to haul in the sizeable total. But it was always losing wickets. Mac Chu scored 48, but when he went the tail did not wag and Carisbrook-Dunedin was dismissed for 134. Finnie took a couple of wickets.
