Scoreboard needs weather protection

Usually, it is only the pitch which needs covering when the rain starts falling at the University Oval.

But staff are having to quickly cover the electronic scoreboard at the venue as well.

The $70,000 scoreboard, which was installed last month, is a vast improvement on the old scoreboard which was no longer fit for purpose.

However, there have been some issues. It was previously in operation under the roof at Forsyth Barr and, to meet the warranty, the scoreboard has to be protected from the weather when it is not in use.

Otago Cricket Association chief executive Mike Coggan said, with hindsight, it would have been prudent to build a weatherproof housing before getting it installed.

''We almost needed to have the scoreboard sit in a box which would have brought huge cost to set that up,'' Coggan said.

''But we are looking to make sure that it is covered because it needs to be covered top, bottom and on the sides.''

The scoreboard malfunctioned during Otago's Plunket Shield match with Wellington last week. Driving rain made its way inside one of the panels.

The temporary solution is to continue wrapping it with a PVC covering until a sliding door which would hook into place can be build at a cost of about $15,000.

The installation budget was $40,000 and should cover the construction costs.

Work has started and Coggan is hopeful it will be completed in time for Otago's home twenty20 match against Northern Districts on December 14.
