Near perfect weather conditions for Otago Cycling Centre time trial championships on Saturday resulted in almost all the competitors posting personal-best times.
For the championship event, riders compete against the clock in their official BikeNZ age-group categories.
The fastest men's time of the day came in the masters men 3 category with David Rush stopping the clock at 27min 45sec.
For the women, Tamsyn Hayes, in the senior women's category, was not far behind with her time of 28min 21sec.
The fastest masters woman was national champion Jan Brosnahan with her time of 31min 57sec.
The junior cyclists are more accustomed to racing over 10km, but they all stepped up and performed very well over the longer distance.
Campbell Mann took the honours in 33min 50sec with Bailey Clouston second in 37min 47sec and Jonathan Atfield third in 39min 41sec.
Despite the event being the annual championship, a plethora of other events contributed to low numbers on the day.
A complete absence of most of the elite male and female riders was disappointing for organisers but understandable as those riders left town to compete in the benchmark road race series yesterday, or the Lake Brunner Road race on Saturday.
The Naseby 12-hour mountain bike race also claimed some club members who might otherwise have competed.
The Otago centre road race championship, originally scheduled for today, was postponed temporarily to ensure a better turnout for that event.
