Football: Bellamy joins Man City from West Ham

Craig Bellamy joined Manchester City from West Ham on Monday, saying he hopes to play a major role in the Premier League club's transformation under its new wealthy owner.

After signing a 4½-year deal, the 29-year-old striker will join his new teammates at their training camp on the Canary Islands and will hope to make his debut on January 28 against Newcastle, another former club.

He could soon be joined by AC Milan star Kaka, who is the target of a world-record bid of more than 100 million pounds ($147 million; €111 million), and Bellamy said he is excited by the club's ambition to challenge for titles.

"I think it is going to be incredible here over the next couple of years," Bellamy said.

"You speak to anyone in the Premier League and they would want to come to Manchester City. It's rare for that to happen outside of the top four, but I think there are a lot of players who would like to come to this club."

Bellamy rejected Tottenham's interest to link up again with Mark Hughes, who also managed him at Blackburn and Wales.

"I am delighted to be working with Craig once more," Hughes said.

"He is an outstanding player who provides us with qualities that we are lacking slightly.

"He has blistering pace, has bags of enthusiasm, has a superb attitude to training and will be a great addition to the squad."

City is his eighth club in nine years after spells at Norwich, Coventry, Newcastle, Celtic, Blackburn, Liverpool and West Ham.

"I am in the best form I have been in for a while, so if I can keep that going then City will get to see it," Bellamy said.

City isn't in action again until January 28 against Newcastle in the Premier League.

Neither club revealed the size of the transfer fee but newspaper reports have said it is at least 14 million pounds ($NZ37 million).
