Wayne Bridge's rift with John Terry manifested itself in public when he refused to shake hands with the scandal-plagued Chelsea captain before Manchester City won 4-2 at Stamford Bridge this morning (NZT).

The English Premier League match was the first time the rival defenders had come face to face since allegations emerged this month that Terry had an affair with the mother of Bridge's son.

The moment Bridge snubbed Terry's outstretched right hand in the pre-match fair play formalities was broadcast live not just on Sky Sports in Britain, but its news channel, which immediately analysed the clip for several minutes with replays.

After Bridge's side emerged victorious, City teammate Craig Bellamy, who scored twice, took a swipe at Terry's conduct.

"I know what JT is like and nothing surprises me about it, so I'm not going to comment on that," Bellamy said. "I think everybody in football knows what the guy is like, but that's off the field."

The home fans booed the 29-year-old Bridge, who shook hands with the rest of the Chelsea lineup, which he was part of before joining City in 2009.

Left back Bridge announced on Thursday that his position in the England team was "untenable" in the fallout from the alleged affair.

Terry had already been stripped of the national captaincy by coach Fabio Capello ahead of the World Cup.
