Angel Di Maria could potentially hold the key to Manchester United's alleged attempts at re-signing current Ballon d'Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

According to the Daily Express, Di Maria, who became close friends with Ronaldo during their time in Madrid, will be the one that United manager Louis van Gaal tasks with persuading the Portuguese superstar to come back to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo has been consistently linked with a move to United since he played against the club for Real in the Champions League in 2013. Also, after the recent events which saw Di Maria leave, Ronaldo is said to be very unhappy with the Spanish club's hierarchy.

Despite protestation from Real club President Florentino Perez that there is no problem, Ronaldo has previously said, "I have strong opinions but I can't always say what I think. Otherwise it would be on the front page tomorrow and I don't want that. But if it was up to me, I wouldn't have [sold Angel]."

Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly said to be keeping an eye on the developing situation, but Ronaldo has often spoke of his undying love for United and its fans and van Gaal hopes the Di Maria factor will be what ultimately pulls him back to Old Trafford.
