The second-year coach is still ''pondering a few things'' before his side's season-opener against Waitakere United in Dunedin a week from Sunday, and is not expected to make a decision until next week.
Frenchman Victor da Costa captained the team for the majority of last season, before striker Tom Jackson took over for the last four games after da Costa walked out on the team.
Jackson has moved to Wellington to play his football this year, meaning Fridge will need to name a new skipper.
Only 11 players from last year's team are back for this campaign, but Fridge has signed veteran midfielder Stu Kelly, who has played more than 100 games in the league, including 23 for the then Otago United in 2009-10.
He could be an option if Fridge goes with a new player. Alternatively, the coach could opt for someone such as defender Matt Joy, who has been with the team since 2011.
Southern United lost 2-1 to Canterbury United in a preseason match in Timaru at the weekend.
Newly signed Scottish striker Sam French put Southern 1-0 up early in the second half, when he got on the end of a Tim McLennan corner.
However, Canterbury banged in a couple of goals to walk away with the win.
Fridge took only 16 players to South Canterbury for the match, and said the plan was to give everybody a ''good whack'' of the game.
''You make changes and you try things out that maybe you wouldn't do in a proper game,'' he said.
''It was a very good exercise. You learn a bit, you try one or two combinations. We took a lot out of it. It was a good workout.''
While the ASB Premiership kicks off on Sunday, when Waitakere United plays Auckland City at North Harbour Stadium, Southern United has to wait another week.
Fridge has reached out to Caversham coach Tim Horner in an attempt to organise a match against a selection of local players to help prepare for the season opener.
If a game cannot be organised, Southern United ''might'' play a friendly match between its own players.
Defender Craig Ferguson is the only player in the 24-man squad in doubt for the team's first match, Fridge said.
Ferguson resumed training the past week after missing a few weeks with a knee injury, but a scan has cleared him of any serious damage.
