Caversham leads the competition on goal difference after beating Green Island 3-0 at Sunnyvale, while Dunedin Technical outplayed University 4-0 at the Caledonian Ground to remain in second place.
However, the top two's lead may be misleading. Although Roslyn-Wakari is four points behind, that club has a game in hand which could minimise the difference.
University's challenge melted when Technical established a 2-0 lead within 10 minutes.
Top striker Aaron Burgess sank an early penalty, then goals by Liam Lockhart, Matt Joy and David Hayman established clear superiority.
"This was a potential banana skin for us," Technical coach Mike Fridge said, referring to the quality of Varsity's squad.
"But we made a strong start and, after going two goals ahead in 10 minutes, we were in control and our keeper hardly had to make a save."
At Sunnyvale, both Green Island and Caversham had injury problems.
Caversham keeper Callum Flaws stood in for the injured Liam Little, then in the warm-up Ant Hancock limped off with a calf strain.
Green Island also lost Canadian striker Donny MacGregor early in the game and, in the reshuffles, it was Caversham's Will Smith who darted in to give his side a 1-0 lead at the break.
Despite impressive matches by Cody Robinson, Tom Kirkwood and keeper Nick Grant, it was Caversham's flank attacks, led by Harley Rodeka and the scampering Anton Ross, which unhinged the home side.
Rodeka, recently named in an ASB Premiership team of the month, hit booming diagonal crossfield passes to release Ross wide on the left. Ross and Jude Fitzpatrick scored the other goals for Caversham.
At Ellis Park, a pulsating match well controlled by referee Kenny Evans kept both Roslyn and Mosgiel supporters on edge until the final whistle.
Roslyn started with a hiss and a roar to go ahead after 18 minutes through striker James Govan, then Mosgiel's giant defender Tom Bekkers converted a long throw-in to equalise just before the break.
Both sides had spells of dominance in the second half, and Roslyn appeared to have broken the deadlock with another Govan goal, but Mosgiel finished strongly with a series of corners that had the Roslyn faithful biting fingernails.
Thanks to a brave match by keeper Nathan Watt and some do-or-die block tackles, Roslyn survived to register its second consecutive win.
Queenstown's visit to Ocean Grove produced a 7-2 win over Grants Braes, and hoisted coach Steve Henderson's team off the bottom position in the FPL.
Braes fought back bravely, but a basement battle is developing among the bottom five teams, which easily matches the drama at the top of the table.
