Centurion sees role as mentoring the younger generation

Susan Greig was surprised by how calm she was as she strolled out to play her 100th game for the province.

The emotion came afterwards.

''They gave me a big trophy [on Monday night] and I was fine in the morning,'' she said.

''But when I actually finished the match I think the realisation of 100 games and all those years playing sank in.''

A kindergarten teacher, Greig spends her working week wrangling pre-schoolers and her days off herding young adults.

The 44-year-old is very much the matriarch of an Otago women's team which features four teenagers.

She had hoped to celebrate her 100th game for Otago with a win against Bay of Plenty 15-year-old Caitlin Maurice.

But Maurice got off to a good start in the women's interprovincial fixture in Whangarei and held on to win by one hole.

Greig gave herself a rather unflattering appraisal.

''I played like an idiot during the front nine. I was five down but I won the next four and got back to square with two to go.''

Maurice won the 17th and the 18th was split.

While it was a disappointing way to celebrate the milestone, the Otago No3 has enjoyed many career highlights since making her provincial debut in Wellington in 1996.

Her strongest performance came at St Clair five years ago, when she won six of her seven games. She recorded five wins and a half in her debut performance and repeated that feat at Weston in 2002.

Other highlights include six Otago champion of champions titles from 2006 to 2017.

She was Otago matchplay champion in 1996, 2008 and from 2014 to 2017.

''There have been too many highlights to name,'' she said.

''I met my husband through golf. My parents play golf. It has sort of been my life, I suppose.

''I like the competition and the friendships. I'm in a role now where I'm here to help the younger generation and they are pretty young this year.

''They've made me captain for the last two years, so they obviously think I do a good job.''

Greig was not sure how long she would continue to play representative golf, but suggested work was her priority and life was busy.
