Duncan Croudis (Otago) made a welcome return to trial golf, shooting a 69 and 71 for a six shot win in the Cromwell 36-hole event  played yesterday.

He finished ahead of Jack Turner, while former Southland No1 Scott Hellier finished third playing in his first Otago trial for the season.

The performances of three of the top juniors, Turner, Callum Judkins and Hayden Robertson, followed their stirling performances in Cambridge last week. All three finished in the top 10.

Blake Mason (Wanaka) finished fourth, while Michael Smith (Island Park) came in sixth.

The Cromwell trial is a key event to select the national interprovincial team, as the 6462m course is the closest to playing interprovincial venue Clearwater, which is 6526m from the back markers.

The performances of Croudis and Hellier — who were both unavailable to play against Southland — will please the selectors.

Ben Patston (Otago) was not without success during the weekend, scoring 68 and 71 to tie the best gross with Arrowtown’s Chris Yallop on the Arrowtown course on Saturday.

Patston won the event after a sudden-death playoff.  Southland’s Jeremy Hall finished one shot back in third place.
