New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell has left himself a huge task to make the cut at the British Open following an awful start to the tournament.

The event at the Ailsa course in Scotland's Turnberry had only been under way for minutes when Campbell, with an early 6.30am start time, plummeted to four-under par as a result of a bogey and triple-bogey on the second and third holes.

His round briefly improved following a birdie on the fifth, but then went further down hill.

Campbell hit bogeys on the eighth and 11th holes, a double-bogey on the 16th and bogey on the 17th to leave him eight-over par on 78 and in last place as he went to the club house with about two-thirds of the field yet to begin their rounds.
