Golf: Gill well placed in British Open qualifier

New Zealand golfer James Gill shot a two-under-par 69 to be tied for second place after the first of two qualifying rounds for the British Open at Glasgow's Gaile Links in Scotland today.

Gill had three birdies and a bogey to finish two shots behind the leader, Elliot Saltman.

The only other New Zealanders in qualifying -- James Hamilton, of Bay of Plenty and Emerson Hall, of Canterbury, shot 79 and 82.

Four Open championship exemptions are available at Gaile Links.

The British Open, the third major championship of the year, starts at Turnberry in Scotland on July 16.
