Golf: Otago finishes sixth as Northland too good

Bay of Plenty successfully defended the junior interprovincial title by beating North Harbour 5-3 in the premier final on the Cambridge course in wet conditions yesterday.

Canterbury finished fourth after losing the next final to Auckland while Otago came in sixth after being beaten by Northland in a hard-fought playoff.

Otago made a poor start and trailed in five games at the turn but a spirited fightback meant the match finished on the final green in favour of Northland by 4 to 3.

In the battle of the No 1 golfers, Sungwoo Han's form deserted him and he lost to the talented Kadin Neho on the 12th green.

Otago No 2 Conor Jamison fought back from one light to beat Braden Keown by two on the final green.

During the event, Jamison managed several fightbacks from difficult situations which helped Otago to its sixth place.

Cody McMullan at No 3 was up against New Zealand under-19 champion Taylor Gill who found his putting touch to win in 15 holes.

The best record for Otago was produced by Conor Ross (No 5) who had four wins and a half from his six matches.

Ross' only loss was at the hands of Joshua Rookes (Bay of Plenty) who is the son of former North Otago professional Robbie Rookes.

Of all of the teams, Northland fronted with the best under 16 golfers who must play at No 6 to No 8.

It was a credit to Inia Logan, Jake Bleach and Terry Kim that all three fought hard for 18 holes and all three halved their matches.
