Town women too strong

The  Town women's team was too strong for its Country counterpart on Sunday, winning 10.5-4.5 at Balmacewen.

Town took a 3-2 lead after the morning foursomes but dominated the afternoon singles, winning seven and halving one of the 10 matches.

The Town selectors placed the youngest two players in the top slots and Abigael Crawford and Annabel Evans responded well, beating the experienced Liz McRae and Dale Dagg in 14 holes in the morning foursomes.

The pair continued their winning form in the afternoon, when Crawford beat McRae 5 and 4 and No2 Evans beat Wakatipu junior Danielle Bailey on the 17th green.

No3 Susan Greig paired up with Sally Shaw in the morning to beat Bailey and Raewyn Devlin 5 and 3.

Greig, a former Otago No1, emerged from the day with two wins, after beating Maria Arhanic in 16 holes in the afternoon singles round.

The other unbeaten golfers for Town were Sharon Fitzgerald and Rachel Lissaman who paired up in the morning and then both had healthy singles wins in the afternoon.

The only Country golfer to emerge unbeaten was Kate O'Connell, who won her foursomes match with Becs Calder in the morning, and halved with Brenda Sutherland in the afternoon.

The results will give the new selection panel food for thought before it names the Otago team to compete against Southland for the Salisbury Cup on October 16.
