Hockey: University A maintains unbeaten run

University A remains unbeaten in the premier women's competition following its 2-0 win over City Highlanders on Saturday.

University showed its class and played with structure, especially in the first half.

The game was played at pace in the first 10 minutes, with City Highlanders looking dominant.

However, City took too long passing around its own players, and University grabbed the ball and sent it into the circle, where Stephanie Mackie quickly spun it into the goal to put the students in front.

The students maintained their lead by passing well and winning a penalty corner, with a second goal scored by Kelly Dempster.

City Highlanders retaliated with captain Tory Dougherty running the ball all the way up but University managed to tackle and prevent the ball entering the circle.

A long ball through to deep right for City led to a penalty corner. University goalie Ginny Wilson saved first the straight shot and then the rebound.

The students put through some accurate long balls, and City's passes were easy to read, allowing University to turn defence into attack.

The second half was a midfield tussle with strong play, shots on goal and penalty corners to both teams, but neither managed to score.

In the other games, Momona A beat Taieri A 5-0, and University B beat St Hilda's 5-0.
