Hockey: Whales swamp KETOB in men's premier grade

The University Blue Whales proved a force to be reckoned with after beating KETOB A 14-1, in the men's premier competition on Saturday.

The Whales opened the game with a bang, starting their run of goals off immediately, as Andrew Ross, Sebastian Buddle and Kieran O'Connor all scored.

KETOB goalie Grant Bracey Brown threw himself about in a consistently valiant effort, despite being swamped by the opposition.

University's Lachie Davidson and Ollie Hopkinson took advantage of the overworked Brown, upping the score to 5-0.

From a penalty corner, O'Connor scored a near flawless goal, flicking the ball past the defence into the net from the top of the circle.

KETOB was still fighting hard as Charles Darling got it on the scoreboard with a diagonal hit at goal just before halftime.

After the break, KETOB seemed to fade as the onslaught from University continued. Nick Instone added two goals to the University list after some solid offence.

O'Connor matched his efforts from the first half, bringing his goal total to four, while Buddle scored his hat trick in the final few minutes.

KETOB's Jamie McKenzie played solidly throughout, putting all his energy into smacking the ball out of the circle.

Despite this, Hopkinson and James Bennett both got past the worn defence and scored for the Whales.

In the other men's premier matches, the Albany Alligators beat Kings United A 2-1, and the University Black Panthers beat the Taieri Tuataras 1-0.
