John McGlashan qualified for the elite Rankin Cup at the New Zealand secondary schoolboys tournament in Tauranga with a win and a draw yesterday.
Adam McNab scored a hat-trick to power McGlashan to an 8-1 win over Kristin School. Angus Loe (two), Max Nation (two) and Luke Pullar scored the other goals. McNab and Sam Lawson then scored goals in a 2-2 draw with St Bede’s that ensured McGlashan would top their pool and qualify for the top 16 at the tournament. They play Wairarapa College today.
Otago Boys’, who started with two losses, beat Waimea College 3-2. Will Nichol (two) and Toby Kerr scored the goals for Otago Boys’, who will play Rongotai today in the second-tier India Shield.
In Hamilton, St Hilda’s finished pool play with three losses at the secondary schoolgirls tournament, and Columba followed their opening draw with two losses yesterday. Both schools play in the second-tier Marie Fry Trophy today.
