Ice hockey teams at Otago Boys High School and King High School could face disciplinary action after being involved in a brawl in a game on Wednesday night.

The game at the Dunedin Ice Stadium was called off about a minute before the finish when players started fighting.

An inter-school game between the sides scheduled for yesterday was subsequently cancelled.

Kings coach Ian Keiller confirmed the incident but played down its significance.

"There was a bit of a scuffle. No-one was hurt or anything. It was just a bit of silly stuff," Keiller told the Otago Daily Times.

"You don't want to see that sort of stuff but it was just an over-reaction. There was a bit of frustration on behalf of our boys because they felt the calls were going the other way. That's about it, really."

Otago Boys coach Richard Sykes was unable to be contacted yesterday.

Simon Christos, a long-time player, was the duty manager at the stadium the night of the brawl. He said punches were thrown, all players on the ice were involved and it appeared coaches were holding other players back to prevent them joining the fray.

Christos said it was the first major brawl in high school ice hockey he had seen. At higher levels of Dunedin ice hockey, players can get four-game bans for fighting.

Christos said the Dunedin Ice Hockey Association would convene a disciplinary meeting to discuss the incident and possible punishment for the players.

However, Otago Secondary School Sports Association director Des Smith said the respective schools were responsible for dealing with the players.

The schools competition is run by the OSSSA. The ice hockey association would only get involved if it deemed the school pupils who also play in club competitions should receive some sort of crossover disciplinary action, he said.

Smith has read a report of the game from the referee and confirmed there had been a brawl.

"I wouldn't say it was serious but it's certainly something we wouldn't want to promote," Smith said.

"Both teams shouldn't have got into what happened. It's really disappointing, quite frankly."

Smith said the incident would be handled by the schools.

"Both principals have met with their teams and are addressing the situation. I'm very confident it will be handled professionally."
