The Hawks and the South City Dragonz will play in the final of the Otago spring competition after both teams won their respective semifinals at Tahuna Park on Saturday.

The high-flying Hawks avenged their round-robin loss to University by winning 50-10 in a dominant display by the defending champion.

The Hawks were too big, too physical and too skilled in their nine-tries-to-two win.

Halfback Rema Smith was a standout in an impressive team.

He scored three tries and controlled the game well with standoff Jack Stewart.

The Hawks started the match strongly by scoring in the opening minute before University hit back midway through the half.

Slowly the Hawks ground down the University defence, scoring a further three tries to lead 22-4 at halftime.

The second half was equally one-sided with the Hawks outscoring University five tries to one.

The Hawks forwards dominated the University pack with aggressive hit-ups and their trademark hard tackling.

From the forward domination, the Hawks' backs were able to capitalise on University's errors as they tried to get back into the match.

This was evident in the last 15 minutes when the Hawks scored four tries after leading 28-10.

South City winger James Spooner scored three tries as the Dragonz beat the South Pacific Raiders 24-14.

Spooner had a mighty game on attack and defence.

He made some good spot tackles and his three tries all involved great pace and some fine skill.

The Dragonz outscored the Raiders five tries to three in a clinical display.

After a tight first half the Dragonz led 16-10 at halftime.

Both teams started confidently and spread the ball early.

The Dragonz looked particularly dangerous when they offloaded.

They outscored the Raiders three tries to two in a half in which territory and possession were even.

In the second half the Dragonz outscored the Raiders two tries to one.

They jumped out to a 20-10 lead when Spooner scored his second try after a fine break down the sideline by centre Mika Mafi.

The Raiders were sparked into action and, with 10 minutes to play, standoff Jonnie Hughes scored his second try.

That set up a frantic finish with the Raiders trying everything to get another six points to send the match into extra time.

But they could not get across the line and a dropped ball on halfway sealed the win for the Dragonz when Spooner scooped it up and ran in for his third try.

Mafi and Spooner were standouts for the Dragonz, while Hughes was huge for the Raiders.

In other matches, the Kia Toa Tigers beat the Kaikorai Silverbacks 44-14, while Pirates defaulted to South City Dragonz B but played an unofficial match, which Pirates won 24-14.
