League: Police pursue Stewart case despite DNA results

Police will pursue the case against Manly fullback Brett Stewart despite reports DNA test results from the league star are inconclusive.

Stewart was arrested on Friday of last week following allegations a 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted after the club's season launch party.

It is alleged the girl and Stewart, 24, were chatting outside a unit block at 8pm AEDT in Pittwater Road at North Manly before she was sexually assaulted.

Stewart has been charged by police and is due to appear in court on April 7. The NRL has banned him from playing until then.

News Ltd reported on Thursday that DNA samples taken from Stewart and returned to police were apparently inconclusive.

A senior police source told News Ltd the case against Stewart would continue.

"We believe we have enough physical evidence and eyewitness reports to proceed with the case against Mr Stewart," the source said.

Police would not confirm the results of the DNA tests.

"That 24-year-old man who was charged ... that remains," a police spokesman told AAP on Friday.

"The DNA results form part of the evidence and for that reason we're not able to comment on the results."

Stewart's lawyer Geoff Bellew told AAP on Thursday he was not aware of the results.

Before the charge was laid, Stewart was to be the face of the NRL season, but he has since been suspended for four matches.

The governing body also fined Manly $A100,000 ($NZ125,700) for the boozy season launch last Friday that preceded the alleged incident involving Stewart.

In an interview with the Nine network recorded last Friday, just hours before the season launch, Stewart said every player had a responsibility to promote the game.

"Obviously we are under a fair bit of scrutiny, I think you just have to be aware of it when you're going out and just know you're always being watched," he said.

Players were under far more scrutiny these days, he said.

"I suppose we haven't helped out matters with some blokes getting in trouble or whatever, but yeah, what do you do?"
