The 23-year-old Aucklander was the first Kiwi driver to win at Supercars' inaugural South Island round.
In Saturday's first race Payne lost a wheel after his pit stop running third.
Said Payne in the victory lane, "We had a wheel go missing down the middle of the track a few hours ago. What a turnaround.
"Man, our car has been so fast all day. We rolled out really strong and just being able to use it today and being able to finally get the win this afternoon has been so epic."
The Grove Racing driver achieved the feat in front of a sold-out Christchurch crowd at Ruapuna Raceway.
Broc Feeney finished second while James Golding finished third.
Golding had his own redemption story after getting stuck on the entry to the pit lane in the first race of the day.
Payne started the race second alongside pole sitter and fellow Kiwi Ryan Wood.
It was Payne's first win of the season and the second race win for Grove Racing after Kai Allen won his maiden race of his career on Friday.
Shell V-Power Racing Team driver Brodie Kostecki still holds the championship lead ahead of Feeney by 61 points.
While Wood still has a 33-point margin in the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.
The final 200km race will start at 3.05pm on Sunday.
