Netball: Dunedin likely to lose game

There is likely to be one Steel game fewer in Dunedin next year.

Steel chief executive David Bannister said the wide-ranging independent review carried out by Brian Hopley, the general manager of Rugby Southland, had been completed.

Bannister said the review had come up with a few things that could bring some differences to the franchise but there were not likely to be wholesale changes.

The review and its findings were in front of the Steel board which would discuss them and talk about possible changes.

Bannister said with Stadium Southland being rebuilt, and the franchise hosting just the six games next season, then four games were likely to be played in Invercargill and two in Dunedin.

Dunedin hosted three games this season, up from the usual two matches, but was that likely to drop back to the standard two games which it had hosted since the Steel franchise started.

He added that in 2014, when the Steel hosted seven home games, Dunedin might get an extra match.

Bannister dismissed speculation the franchise would base itself solely in Dunedin or Invercargill and said the Steel needed a presence in both cities and also needed to make an impact in the Central Otago-Lakes area.

He said the coaching structure of the Steel was one thing which had been reviewed but no decision had been made on the future of the coaches.

Janine Southby and Natalie Avellino were the co-coaches of the Steel this year, taking over from Robyn Broughton.

After a promising start, the Steel lost its last 10 games last season to end up in the bottom reaches of the table.

Avellino confirmed she was on a two-year deal with the Steel. The agreement started last season.

The coaches had indicated to management the players they wanted for next season and could now start talking to players.

It was envisaged the bulk of players for next year would be signed by the end of October.
