Netball: Playing for Steel appeals

South African defender Vanes-Mari du Toit would love to play for the Steel next season.

And a comment on a social website last week indicated she had started negotiations with the franchise.

But the athletic 23-year-old was keen to set the record straight when contacted for comment yesterday.

"I just want to clarify things," she told the Otago Daily Times from Wellington.

"There has been a lot of speculation and rumours going around. What I can say to you is they have asked me for my contact details and that is all I can say at this stage."

Her post on Twitter was very misleading, then.

Responding to suggestions she had signed with the Steel, du Toit wrote "Nothing confirmed yet, but negotiations are underway (sic)".

However, both parties seem very keen to reach terms. Du Toit wants to play ANZ Championship netball and the Steel is looking for a defender of her calibre.

"It is a dream and something I would love to do. Netball is a passion and I do it because I love it. I don't do it because of all the extras. Getting the opportunity to improve my game and play alongside some of the best in the world is an opportunity which is more than I would ever expect."

The South African team is in Wellington for the New Zealand leg of the quad series.
