The 19-year-old goal shoot was one of the star performers for Otago in the inaugural Lois Muir Challenge.
Her accurate shooting helped the province maintain an unbeaten record and claim the spoils. The tournament is a feeder competition for the ANZ Championship, and Campbell hopes the experience will be a springboard for her netball career.
‘‘I want to take that step up to the next level,'' she said. ‘‘My confidence has grown hugely. I've learnt so much from [coach] Janine [Southby]; she has been awesome.''
Otago's narrow wins over Bay of Plenty (51-49) and Auckland (51-48) in the final weekend of the competition secured the title for the Southerners.
Both matches were keenly fought, but Otago showed a lot of character to stage a finalquarter comeback against Bay of Plenty.
‘‘It felt so good. It kind of felt like we'd won it after that game because everyone was buzzing after that quarter. But we still had to keep level-headed because we still had one more game to go and we wanted to win that. We wanted to be unbeaten.''
There were no wild celebrations after the tournament - the long trip home from Rotorua ensured that.
‘‘Everyone was a bit grumpy and tired,'' she said.
Netball New Zealand President Lois Muir was thrilled to be the tournament's namesake, and thought the competition had been a success.
‘‘It is a great concept and a marvellous opportunity for these young people to stand up and make their mark. It's also great for coaches.
‘‘To have great players and coaches we've got to have tiers to allow people to improve their game and be successful. If we are going to beat Australia in the future, then this is the level we have to work at.''
