Netball: Thunderbirds, Magic favoured in semifinals

The Steel's season has ended but four teams can still dream of winning the title. Adrian Seconi takes a quick look at the ANZ Championship semifinals.

Major semifinal

Adelaide Thunderbirds v Melbourne Vixens

When: Sunday, 1.45pm.
Where: Netball SA Stadium, Adelaide.
Record: Played 14, Thunderbirds 5 wins, Vixens 9 wins.

Key players: Thunderbirds centre Natalie von Bertouch sets the tempo and takes charge of getting the ball to shooter Carla Borrego. For the Vixens, it all starts at the back, where defender Geva Mentor is the best in the business.

Prospects: The Vixens have history on their side and a formidable defensive unit. But the Thunderbirds have played superb team netball. They have been the form team in the competition and, if they have an edge, it is in the shooting circle. They also have home-court advantage.

Our tip: Thunderbirds 45-43.

Minor semifinal

Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic v Queensland Firebirds

When: Sunday, 7.20pm.
Where: Claudelands Arena, Hamilton.
Record: Played 7, Magic 3 wins, Firebirds 4 wins.

Key players: Magic defenders Casey Kopua and Leana de Bruin have the tough job of restricting towering shooter Romelda Aiken and her partner in crime, Natalie Medhurst.

Prospects: The Magic recorded a 65-63 win in extra time against the Firebirds in round 10 and is peaking at the right time of the season. It also has plenty of experience, having played in every finals series.

Our tip: Magic 55-51.
