An in-form University-Albion A looked like a champion when it outplayed Phys Ed Phedex 77-44 in the Dunedin premier club competition at the Edgar Centre on Saturday.
Uni-Albion had the confidence of knowing the safe hands of Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic and ex-Silver Fern Jodie Brown were on the end of any attacking move.
Goal shoot Brown shot 48 goals from 57 attempts.
She was supported strongly by Kirsten Craig, who had one of her best games of the season, shooting 25 goals from 29 attempts.
Craig not only shot well but also developed strong links with her team-mates, encouraged by Brown's on-court guidance. Both teams took a little time to settle, but it was Uni-Albion which gained the upper hand, leading 17 -12 at the first break.
The second quarter was dominated by fast attack play by both teams, with Uni-Albion gaining another five-goal advantage to lead 37-27 lead at halftime. In the second and third quarters, the Uni-Albion players' ability to run on to passes into space highlighted the difference in the two teams' skills.
Uni-Albion opened the court up and got the ball quickly from one end to the other.
Phys Ed Phedex was left struggling to keep up with the speed of the ball.
The third and fourth quarter scores were 19-8 and 21-9 respectively.
In the other match of the day, College A surprised Phys Ed A 60-49.
College led by the slightest of margins throughout the match and took a 43-40 advantage into the final quarter.
A gritty College upped its performance for the last 15 minutes and the more favoured Phys Ed A failed to respond.
The other match of the round, between Southern A and Southern B, will be played midweek.
