The Dunedin Premier club competition rolled back into action after the university break on Saturday, with Phys Ed Blue beating University Albion A in the first game of the day 59-46.

The game started out as a bit of a tussle, until Uni Albion put a run of seven together to gain an 11-8 lead midway through the quarter.

The first stanza was where Uni Albion looked to be at its best, with ball flowing into the attacking circle with relative ease and the full court defence turning over plenty to work with. A couple of intercepts straight off the centre pass from Payton Silvester meant Albion was able to take a five-goal, 18-13 lead into the first break.

It was a different story when the teams took the court for the second quarter, with Phys Ed coming out of the gates strongly to bring the game back to even at 21-21, and then pushing on with a five-goal run to take a lead of its own. Phys Ed ended the quarter up 31-26.

Phys Ed changed its defensive end, which disrupted the flow for Albion and meant it picked up plenty of ball throughout the second spell.

However, it was their attacking speed that really put the pressure on Albion, with the ball beating the defenders and the attacking end for Phys Ed able to dictate the space.

The experienced head of Jo Morrison was a definite stand-out for Phys Ed with her calming influence in the attacking third. Her ability to direct her feeders and her connection with goal attack Marcia Jerram was too much for the defensive unit of Albion. The interchange between the pair was textbook, with some great draws and decisive base line drives to get the ball in nice shooting positions.

Not only was their court play great to watch, but their shooting statistics backed it up, with Morrison shooting 87% and Jerram chipping in with plenty at goal attack with 25 shots of her own.

By the end of the third quarter, Phys Ed held a 47-36 advantage.

In the final quarter, Phys Ed was able to hold off a couple of mini runs Albion strung together, which never looked like they would be enough to topple them as they kept the momentum.

The defensive pressure put on throughout the court forced a number of errors from Albion players. Phys Ed capitalised on this to extend its 11-goal buffer from three-quarter time out to a well-deserved 13-goal win at the final whistle.

In the other game, Phys Ed A dominated Phys Ed B 87-35.

The other two games of Premier A, St Hilda's Senior A vs Markhams College A and Southern Magpies vs South Pacific Titans A, have been rescheduled.
