The Southern Steel will probably have a new coach by the end of the month.

Applications for the job, which was left vacant by Noeline Taurua, close today and will be considered over the coming weeks.

''Once we've got all those applications in we'll be looking to assess them and running through an interview process over the next couple of weeks,'' Steel chief executive Lana Winders said.

''I'd like to think that we'd be in a position to make an announcement by the end of the month.''

Winders said there were several key qualities the franchise was looking for in the successful applicant in order to carry on from the highly successful 2016 season.

''Obviously, we're looking for a coach that we know is going to be able to perform at that top elite level,'' she said.

''We are looking for a coach who is going to be able to embrace the culture that was developed, particularly in the last season, and take that to the next level.

''There's a lot of great work been done over the last three years and we don't want a coach to come in and turn that upside down and dismantle it.

''I'd rather our coach is able to recognise it for the qualities it has and just build on those.''

She was pleased with the quality of applicants.

''There's some candidates there that I'd be very happy to consider in the coaching role.''

Meanwhile, the Steel is set to announce its two final signings of the season today. The signings will complete its 10-player roster for New Zealand's new netball league, set to replace the ANZ Championship.

While the team is still three months away from gathering, Winders said it has been exciting seeing the success of the Steel players in the Silver Ferns during the Quad Series.

''It's probably been more exciting this year than it has been for a number of years, just because of the number of Steel players involved [in the Silver Ferns],'' she said.

''In particular, seeing Jane Watson come from outside the squad and being valued by the coach and given so much game time, that's been very exciting to watch.''

A test match against Australia in Invercargill in October is on the horizon and was creating plenty of buzz, particularly with the prospect of several Steel players taking part.

''There's a fair bit of preparation and excitement in behind that,'' she said.
